7 Innovative Spring Cleaning Hacks You Need to Try

If you’re like us, your favorite TikTok users are professional organizers, cleaners, and handypeople. There’s something so satisfying about watching these pros’ before and afters, and the best part is we actually learn something!

To celebrate the official arrival of spring, we’ve rounded up our favorite spring cleaning hacks: some from TikTok and some from our team!

1. Laundry Stripping

Laundry stripping is likely the biggest cleaning craze to take over TikTok, everyone’s new favorite social media platform. What is laundry stripping exactly? It’s the process of deep cleaning linens, towels, and any other washable item in your home that gets used all the time.

First, you must launder your items as you normally would. Then, you fill the bathtub with hot water, and mix one part Borax, one part baking soda and two parts laundry detergent. Once dissolved, add your linens and agitate—a broom handle is a good contender for this!

Soak for 5-7 hours, and agitate once an hour or so. Then (and this is by far the worst part), remove the sopping wet linens from the bathtub, and put them in the washing machine for only a rinse and spin cycle.

A tip for removing your linens from the bathtub is this: drain the water first, then gather one thing at a time and roll it up like a yoga mat, pressing the excess water out of the fabric. This ends up being way easier than trying to just gather your things out of the tub and throwing them in a bucket.

2. Machine Wash Your Pillow

This doesn’t work for all pillows, but it works for ours. We recommend only laundering your Coop pillow once a year, so spring cleaning is the perfect time.

Simply remove your insert from the outer case. Secure the zipper closed with a safety pin to ensure that it does not open/spill memory foam during the wash (this step is very important). Then, wash in cold water on the delicate setting. Make sure only to use normal detergent and a little bit of Borax if you want; no fabric softener or bleach!

When drying, you have to dry one pillow at a time. Two or more just crowds the dryer and doesn’t work. Tumble dry on the low heat setting until fully dry. Once it’s ready to go, fluff your pillow back up and sleep soundly.

3. Vacuum Underneath and Inside Your Appliances

Spring cleaning is the time to move all the big, brutish appliances in your house to clean out from under and behind them. But some appliances can benefit from a vacuum of their own. The oven, for example, should be vacuumed before any deep cleaning starts. Just make sure, of course, everything is dry!

You can also clean your refrigerator coils by vacuuming them. If you’ve never thought about your refrigerator’s coils, you’re not alone. The coils are either at the back of the fridge or at the bottom behind the grill. Be sure to unplug your refrigerator before you start cleaning! Once you locate and get to the coils, get rid of all the loose dust and dirt with a paint brush, then start vacuuming away with the crevice and brush tools. Keeping the coils clean will ensure your fridge runs smoothly through the summer!

4. Deep Clean Your Dryer’s Lint Catcher

We all clean the lint catcher with frequency, but did you know you can deep clean it? First things first, remove the lint screen and get everything off it that you can. Then wash it with warm soap and water and let air dry. While the lint catcher itself is drying, use your vacuum’s crevice tool to suck up all the lint you can from inside the slot where the lint catcher lives.

5. Clean Your Grout with Toilet Cleaner

This isn’t a quick job, but it is a clever one. Using toilet bowl cleaner is a great way to target the grout lines. Simply trace the grout lines with the toilet bowl cleaner nozzle, scrub lightly with a cleaning brush and let it set for 5 minutes. Go back and scrub with the brush again and be absolutely amazed by how clean your grout is getting. Wipe down with a mixture of hot water and vinegar.

6. Use a UV Light on Your Toilet

Yes, it’s gross, but this trick is especially helpful if you have kids. By using a UV light in the bathroom, you’ll be able to spot all the areas that have been touched by urine, and thus, be able to clean them! And believe us, you’ll realize that it’s way, way more areas than just the toilet seat.

7. Descale Your Humidifier with Coffee Machine Cleaner

This one actually comes from a member of the Coop Dream Team. Many humidifier manufacturers suggest cleaning the machine with vinegar, but those big plastic gallon bottles are so wasteful. Since vinegar is used to descale and sanitize, a former barista thought she’d just use some espresso machine cleaner instead.

Use about 2 teaspoons of coffee or espresso machine cleaner per half gallon of water. Fill up the humidifier tank halfway with water and add the cleaner. Put the tank back on the motor and let it sit, off and unplugged, for up to an hour. Finish by scrubbing any buildup with a toothbrush and rinsing thoroughly. Your humidifier will be so much cleaner than if you had used vinegar.
