Fall Asleep Faster: Inside Coop's Pillow Sleep Study
|
In a recent independent, in-home study conducted by SleepScore Labs, Coop's Original Adjustable Pillow helped participants fall asleep an average of 6 minutes faster—a 19% improvement in sleep onset latency—compared to their previous pillows. This objective result was measured across 948 nights with 31 healthy adults, using a medically validated sleep monitor. Beyond falling asleep faster, self-reported results showed significant improvements in comfort (93%), support (93%), feeling well-rested (90%), and sleep quality (83%), while nighttime pain was notably reduced. The study was not conducted by Coop but by SleepScore Labs, adding third-party credibility and earning the pillow the SleepScore Validated seal. As Dr. Sharon Danoff-Burg of SleepScore Labs notes, even modest improvements in healthy adults are meaningful, and Coop’s adjustability lets sleepers truly personalize their comfort.
“Falling asleep faster is a key sleep outcome in consumer research, and producing a measurable change in a healthy adult population is meaningful.” — Dr. Sharon Danoff-Burg, Senior Principal Research Scientist, SleepScore Labs

SleepScore Labs, the research and validation division of Sleep.ai, ran a four-week in-home study with 31 healthy adults ages 25 to 68. Participants spent three weeks on their existing pillow as a baseline, then switched to the Original Adjustable Pillow for four weeks, including a one-week adjustment period.
Sleep was tracked with SleepScore Max, a non-contact sleep monitor validated against medical-grade polysomnography, across 948 nights of real data — not a lab, not a single night, just people sleeping in their own homes.
The result: average sleep onset latency dropped from 30 minutes to 24 minutes, a statistically significant 19% reduction (p = .022). That's the one objectively measured finding in the study, and it's the headline number — less time lying awake, more time actually asleep.
Beyond how fast people fell asleep, the sleep study also collected daily self-reported ratings on comfort, support, sleep quality, feeling rested, and nighttime pain. Every one of these numbers moved in the same direction on the Original Adjustable Pillow:
These are self-reported findings — how people said they felt, not something a device measured. But five separate measures moving this consistently, across 31 people and nearly 1,000 nights, is a pattern worth paying attention to. When you wake up feeling rested, the rest feels easy.
“Falling asleep faster is a key sleep outcome in consumer research, and producing a measurable change in a healthy adult population is meaningful,” said Dr. Sharon Danoff-Burg, Senior Principal Research Scientist at SleepScore Labs. “Healthy sleepers have less room for improvement than a clinical sample. Even modest improvements in the time it takes to fall asleep can matter, especially when observed under real-world sleeping conditions at home.”
Worth noting: participants in the study didn't have a diagnosed sleep disorder. That's an important distinction. This study speaks to how an adjustable pillow can support better nights for everyday sleepers — not as a treatment for insomnia or any other sleep condition.
The Original Adjustable Pillow has been a cornerstone of Coop's lineup for more than a decade, built and shaped by feedback from real customers, not a fixed mold. Fill can be added or removed to match your sleep position and body type. Precision-engineered by us, adjusted by you.
That adjustability is likely a big part of why the numbers moved the way they did. A pillow that's too flat, too firm, or just off for your body works against you every night. One you can dial in stops fighting your sleep and starts supporting it.
Better sleep isn’t just a tagline. It’s a result we deliver.
What is the SleepScore Validated seal?
It's a designation awarded by SleepScore Labs, the research and validation division of Sleep.ai, to products that demonstrate measurable sleep improvements through a rigorous, multi-week, in-home study. The Original Adjustable Pillow earned this seal based on the results above.
How much faster did people fall asleep with the Original Adjustable Pillow?
Study participants fell asleep an average of 6 minutes faster — a 19% reduction in sleep onset latency — after switching to the Original Adjustable Pillow, measured objectively with a non-contact sleep monitor.
Was this study conducted by Coop?
No. It was conducted independently by SleepScore Labs, using SleepScore Max, a device validated against hospital-grade polysomnography.
Does the Original Adjustable Pillow treat insomnia or other sleep disorders?
No. Participants reported difficulty falling or staying asleep but did not have diagnosed sleep disorders, so the results reflect everyday sleep support rather than treatment for a clinical condition.
How is the Original Adjustable Pillow adjustable?
You can add or remove fill to change its loft and firmness, shaping it to your sleep position and body type instead of settling for a fixed design.
Six minutes might not sound like much — until you're the one lying awake, waiting for sleep to show up. Independent, at-home data now backs up what long-time customers have said for years: the right adjustable pillow helps you fall asleep faster, feel more supported, and wake up more like yourself.
