Your Coop pillow is ready to sleep on the moment you unbox it. Everything after that is optional. There are three valid ways to pillowcase layering, and the right one depends on what you want out of it — not on adding as much as possible.
One pillowcase layering rule worth leading with: every layer you add is one more barrier between you and airflow. Fewer layers breathe better, and better airflow means less trapped heat and less sweating. Pillowcase layering is because you want what they do, not out of habit.
The liner is the inner shell holding your adjustable fill. It's the pillow insert that Coop makes from a 2-way stretch fabric that gives as you add or remove fill. Everything else goes over it.
The most breathable setup, and the one we built for.
Pillowcase layering includes: liner, fill, and the included outer pillowcase. Nothing else. Fewest layers, most airflow, least heat retention.
The only thing worth doing on night one is adjusting the fill until your head sits level with your spine. Precision-engineered by us. Adjusted by you.
Want your pillow to match your sheet set or feel different against your skin? Swap the outer pillowcase, don't stack it.
Remove the outer pillowcase that came with your pillow, then slide your new one directly over the liner. Here’s a few of our favorites to add to your pillowcase layering set-up:
Doubling fabric pillowcases is the most common pillowcase layering mistake here. Two cases trap heat, add bulk, and mute the surface feel you chose the new one for. One fabric pillowcase at a time.
Our Ultra-Tech Pillow Protector goes directly over the liner and shields your fill from sweat, oils, and spills.
You can sleep on the protector as-is. It's a finished surface, and leaving it bare keeps your setup to two layers instead of three, but you can add pillowcase layering over the protector if you want:
Matching your sheet set – Percale, Linen-Cotton, Tencel™
A cool-to-touch surface – Cool Side™ Pillowcase & the Cool+ Pillowcase
We've spent over a decade asking why a pillow should be fixed when nothing else you sleep in is. The answer shaped how we design our pillowcase layering: fill you can tune and layers you can swap as your sheets and seasons change.
Your pillowcase layering isn't finished when it ships. It's finished when it fits you.
Only if you're replacing it with a different fabric pillowcase. Remove the included outer pillowcase and put your new one over the liner. Never layer two fabric pillowcases at once in your pillowcase layering set-up.
Yes. Our Ultra-Tech Pillow Protectors are a finished sleeping surface. Increase your pillowcase layering only if you want to match your sheets or want a cool-to-touch cover.
Yes. Each added layer reduces airflow through the pillow, which traps more heat and can lead to more sweating. Keep your pillowcase layering setup to the fewest layers that give you what you want.
In your pillowcase layering set-up the pillow protector should go directly over the liner, under any pillowcase you add. It can't protect the fill from any other position.
